Finding Freedom in the Unknown

This week marks the official start of my butt getting up and back out into community, after a 2-year long break. Despite my personal loathing of most social media platforms, I must confess that creating an online bulletin board via Instagram, was not my worst idea. This public page offers weekly gatherings as well as regular posts filled to the brim with positivity, love, and unity. Oracle Card pulls, excerpts from this very Blog, and even some fun digital art are just a few additional reasons to follow along. My original plan was to allow for followers, near and far, but was purposely choosing not follow back, hoping to keep past social media anxieties from returning. However, a bestie of mine offered a different perspective. She invited me to follow just a couple main figures in my life to help showcase to others where my values are rooted. That was an easy task to accomplish as I clicked an Abraham Hicks page, a Bob Marley tribute page, Quotes from Buddha, and a Jimmy Buffett fan page. Here is why her suggestion to follow what I “represent” (and I use that term extremely loosely!) actually made sense to me.

As more and more people flock to my style of being, there is an elephant in the room; “What religion is she?!” You may find this hard to believe, but I actually get asked this question, often. It is no secret that my language and variety of wellness modalities have an air of Spirituality to them, yet it is still fairly subtle ~ as I am not one to speak out against any denomination. I push zero agenda because I don’t have one. You can even find me sitting in on a motely of services that have included a Spanish Catholic Mass, a Protestant Bible Study, and even a Buddhism practice where those participating proudly chanted, “Nam Myoho Renge Kyo,” which declares to foster inner peace and calm. In 2019, on a flight back home from a 5-day Native American Retreat, I landed myself a 2.5-hour layover. Instead of mindlessly playing on my phone, I took this opportunity to meditate and sit in stillness. I left the hustle and bustle sounds of an airport behind me as I walked to the second floor and entered their Chaple. There I sat in the peace and slowed down my breathing, absorbing the Angelic energy around me. My favorite part about this Chaple was that it was for everyone. Every religion was welcome. And you know what? I had the pleasure of witnessing exactly that. Person after person, popped in, embraced their own way of worship and ceremony, then quietly left. It was beautiful.

When people ask me what religion I am, it would be easy for me to say, “All of them,” as I can clearly see how majority of religions are saying the same thing, but with various language choices and their own spin on the stories being passed on through the generations. Then again, I could also respond by saying, “None of them” as I do not subscribe to any one in particular. Many religions take a small child and say to them, “THIS way is the right way. THIS is the truth. The only truth.” (Of course, I am paraphrasing.) Children are not usually encouraged to question the “truth” that is being taught to them and in fact, they are often taught to be weary of anyone who does question what is being dispensed.

I take my faith a-la-carte and find freedom in the unknown. There are currently (approximately) 10,000 distinct religions in the world, with the four main religions rooted in Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Majority of those that practice religion believe that their religion is “the right one.” For me, I couldn’t imagine standing in that level of unwavering certainty. I enjoy the possibility of possibilities! As I continue in my own practices and as I begin Life Coaching again, I can assure you, all beliefs are safe with me. I have no alternative motives, secret Spiritual agendas, or the desire to convince anyone of anything. Mostly because you will not hear me claim my own personal beliefs as “facts.” They aren’t. They are just beliefs, and they do not have to matter anymore than the color of my hair or my eyes. As a coach, a community leader, and as a friend, I will forever honor the comfort levels of those in front of me and gift everyone the safe space to be in whatever practice calls to them.
